21st century British Muslim in London; a message from the course leader

In summary, Muslim faith schools today are focused on four key areas:

  1. Outstanding attainment, to ensure social mobility, and to meet DfE requirements.

  1. Preservation of cultural and religious identity, however this is defined.

  1. And that both have the broader aim of benefiting wider society.

  1. That schools survive the next two years, as controversies over British values, safeguarding, SMSC etc. multiply and intensify.

Tailored course #2

21st Century British Muslim

by getting on the programme now

This tailored 11-hour course has been developed over 18 months to meet the highly specialised needs of Muslim schools in the UK, in relation to results, radicalisation issues and leadership. It puts Ofsted-compliant, effective student-centred learning at the fingertips of all staff, including unqualified teachers, across all subjects, driving attainment and progress, while integrating behavior and higher level thinking.

Specifically, the course gives a practical demonstration of how to facilitate the Islamic component of the curriculum in relation to both subject matter and authentic identity formation in the context of “Fundamental British Values” and other requirements outlined in the Independent Schools Standards.

Benefit to schools include:

  • creating a unique collaborative school ethos
  • social skills/adab integration in every stage of all lessons
  • tightly controlled student-centred learning
  • effectively guided enquiry and exploration into tasks and knowledge
  • real-time, realistic individual assessment
  • instant, organic feedback of students' learning process
  • critical thinking and debating skills integrated with hard learning
  • sense of self through negotiation of meanings and opinions
  • improved attainment
  • accelerated progress
  • closing achievement gaps
  • for state-funded schools, most effective investment of Pupil Premium, according to the Sutton Trust.
  • management demonstrates ability to tackle potential radicalisation and promote Fundamental British Values through authentic, student-centred enquiry.

“Mr Werdelin has developed a propitious educational project ... Melding fluency of subject matter with an interactive pedagogy, his sensitivity to faith traditions and the challenges faced by teachers ensures its continued relevancy.”

“I will definitely use the CLIPs where pupils have to think about their own argument and counter-argument to an issue that they don't personally agree with. I teach Citizenship, and students always have to think about the opposite point of view.”

- Participant, 21st Century British Muslim trial,

Date Valley School, 2015
