Reading and writing through Cooperative Learning

Better (Talk4)Writing through Cooperative Learning

The last of three open CPD sessions in Walsall took place yesterday at North Walsall Academy (previously Charles Coddy Walker).

For the benefit of attendees at these events, and schools who have gone through the Skills & Mastery or 21st century British Muslim courses, this short post demonstrates the integration of Talk4Writing with Cooperative Learning. For more on the events, see Better Reading through Cooperative Learning and “Outstandingly Simple”follow-up; an introduction to Cooperative learning at Queen Mary’s Grammar School.

Cooperate Be Literate

I am working with a highly experienced science teacher to discover how Cooperative Learning can further literacy skills in science from KS2 to University. Given the routine assertions that...

‘‘A highly engaging workshop full of practical activities based on deep pedagogical experience.

Activities that can be used immediately.”

- Mr Alexander Bowles, Headteacher, Great Hockham Primary School, 2016. On Skills & Mastery.

Why be Good when you can be Outstanding?

Great Hockham Primary School is a small, village school, set in between Thetford and Watton. The school has 4 classes catering for all children, whatever their needs, abilities and background, aged from 3 to 11.

After attending Islam in RE - Religious Literacy and Controversy through Enquiry in 2015, former assistant headteacher at Tuckswood Academy, Alexander Bowles, witnessed the effect of Cooperative Learning on social skills and attainment for this school's challenged pupils.

Now a headteacher at Great Hockham Primary, Mr Bowles has joined with Caston C of E VA Primary School to purchase a tailored version of Skills & Mastery, replete with lesson planning.

Both schools are doing the first two core CPD twilights prior to summer holidays to be ready for a flying start in September. Both aim to go from good to outstanding at their next inspection.

By two small schools joining on a single delivery, the price for each school is around £500 - less than the price of two good laptops.

“A wonderful way to create equal learning

opportunities instantly!”

- Mrs Laura Sproston, Headteacher, Caston VA Primary School, 2016..
