Minute-by-minute management of pupils and learning outcomes

Cooperative Learning is not "group work," but rather defines step-by-step how students interact with materials and each other, to achieve your specific objectives in any subject ...

“Hundreds of studies over more than three decades show a positive correlation between cooperative learning and achievement. Research has been done in every subject, at all grade levels, in all kinds of schools.”

- "Putting Cooperative Learning to the Test" by Laurel Shaper Walters Harvard Education Letter

Jakob Werdelin

Given the unique history of

UK education, Cooperative Learning is the way to span the left-right divide and provide Ofsted outstanding student-centred learning...

I came into teaching relatively late in life - having my first daunting experience at an inner-city Copenhagen school in 2001 - and I take my work experience in advertising, IT product development, as well as youthful artistic aspirations, with me into my classrooms.

By trade, I am a teacher of English as a foreign language; which in the Danish context means teaching the history, culture and politics of the entire English speaking world, including India and Pakistan. On top of ongoing Cooperative Learning CPD, a diploma degree in psychotherapy, and a Cambridge CELTA, I support my teaching with insights from three years studying Arabic and Middle Eastern studies at Copenhagen University.

I specialise in socially challenged, multicultural, multilingual learners. I have witnessed first-hand the incredible power of Cooperative Learning in challenged environments: Exam average in our underachieving, underfunded Islamic faith school had moved from E to C two years into my tenure as head of English, and national average was surpassed in four years.

However, I see outstanding academic achievement of each individual pupil in relation to the wider impact of education on communities, citizenship, business, culture and politics. My engagement with West Midlands Police is an example of how Cooperative Learning may be used in a wider context.

With the current focus on the Asian community, my main interest in the UK is how cooperative learning may turn the heterogeneous/multicultural challenge into an advantage. A number of my research papers on student-centred strategies in traditional environments, Islam and statecraft, media, social constructivism, are available for peer review on ResearchGate, or may be downloaded as pdfs from my blog cooperativelearning.works.

I have spoken on these topics in several workshops, conferences and seminars. My latest presentation was at UKFIET at Oxford University; more information in events.

A staunch believer in lifelong learning, I am a mature student at of Sociology of Religion at Copenhagen University, where I am currently writing a BA paper on the Trojan horse scandal in Birmingham. I have therefore shifted my focus from rural East Anglia to encompass the Midlands.

I am always open to individuals or institutions who wish to explore the power of Cooperative Learning in their fields of expertise. CooperateBeLiterate with Mr Ben Rogers of ReadingforLearning, and the Enquiry & Immersion school programme are examples of such fertile collaboration, and demonstrate the almost endless reach of cooperative learning.

Given the unique history of UK education, and its current crisis, I have absolute confidence that Cooperative Learning is the way to span the left-right divide and provide Ofsted outstanding student-centred learning with full teacher control, balance between group aims and empowered individuals, and a respectful, caring ethos.

My vision is to see Cooperative Learning change the face of UK education in such a way that everyone wins. It is possible.

Cooperative Learning, Ofsted and academic results

“National average for level fours combined for Pupil Premium is 67%. Well, this year we achieved 75% …”

Handle behavior and attainment simultaneously

The Skills & Mastery course is tailored for tasks and rote learning, yet the impact on social skills extends beyond the classroom...

“... enables everyone to contribute, encourages participants to actively listen to each other (...) provided a way to engage in controversy within a safe social environment. The tools are very easy to use.”

- Kevin Blogg, teacher & teacher trainer, SACRE, Norfolk County Council, 2014

Use Cooperative Learning to engage your stakeholders

A cooperative ethos should not be limited to behaviour and attainment of pupils. Stage guided enquires and organise meetings to engage your stakeholders...

“...responding both to the demand of government and community as well as those like myself who see young people on a daily basis trying to understand their world view...”

-Garry Swinton, Chaplain of The Grey Coat Hospital and Westminster City School, Healing Fractures II - Beyond Birmingham, March 17, 2015

‘‘‘Use active learning techniques;’’ ‘‘Be responsive in the classroom;’’

‘‘Promote respect for diversity;’’ “Foster critical thinking.”

[How to] respond simultaneously and responsibly to these multiple demands?
