Minute-by-minute management of pupils and learning outcomes

Cooperative Learning is not "group work," but rather defines step-by-step how students interact with materials and each other, to achieve your specific objectives in any subject ...

“Hundreds of studies over more than three decades show a positive correlation between cooperative learning and achievement. Research has been done in every subject, at all grade levels, in all kinds of schools.”

- "Putting Cooperative Learning to the Test" by Laurel Shaper Walters Harvard Education Letter

“...ensured full commitment from

all participants

... the way it was managed was very illuminating”

Handle behavior and attainment simultaneously

The Skills & Mastery course is tailored for tasks and rote learning, yet the impact on social skills extends beyond the classroom...

“... enables everyone to contribute, encourages participants to actively listen to each other (...) provided a way to engage in controversy within a safe social environment. The tools are very easy to use.”

“Werdelin's Cooperative Learning package can be described in three words: Innovative, Engaging, and Effective. A must for critical, creative, and transformative education!”

- Mohammad Elshimi, University of Exeter, author of De-radicalisation interventions as technologies of the self

To be “ready for life in modern Britain,” it is vital for pupils to play an active part in the wider community surrounding the school. In fact, successful active citizenship starts in school.

Cooperative Learning secures high individual accountability, yet trains participants to listen, observe, uncover, reflect, discuss and express opinions, arrive at solutions and execute them in collaboration. Whether assuming responsibility for problems in school or in the wider community. Whether inviting to an afternoon debate, staging theatre plays or organising charity events, Cooperative Learning provides a transferable toolkit to put pupils in the driver seat without teachers loosing oversight.

Events may also be staged exclusively by management to support parent networking or engagement, uncover needs or investigate opportunities with local business, faith communities, and other special interest groups. (For more on Cooperative Learning for adults, see our Active Citizens work with West Midlands Police). forEspecially in relation to the sometimes difficult transition to academy status, Cooperative Learning may facilitate a safe, respectful forum in which issues may be aired and perhaps resolved.

Projects such as the faith community outreach programme Enquiry & Immersion and Healing Fractures II - beyond Birmingham are very different practical examples of how to approach difficult subjects using Cooperative Learning.

I am currently investigating how Cooperative Learning may enhance outreach efforts at a major university and developing a series of workshops aimed at parents with a primary school.

‘‘‘Use active learning techniques;’’ ‘‘Be responsive in the classroom;’’

‘‘Promote respect for diversity;’’ “Foster critical thinking.”

[How to] respond simultaneously and responsibly to these multiple demands?
